"Where’s the Bear?" - Toddler Favorite Board Book
I was going through some old boxes in the attic and came across one of our all‑time favorite board books: Where’s the Bear? by Charlotte Pomerantz. Because the whole family is here for the holidays, we were doing sort of a Marie Kondo challenge — keep or toss based on whether anyone had a personal attachment to each item. Honestly, when I pulled our tattered copy of Where’s the Bear? out of the box, the reaction was overwhelming and unanimous. In the words of my now 19‑year‑old, “You cannot EVER throw that one out.” Before I go any further, here is a link to this hard-to-find book. I love the idea of sharing books and though this is not one you will get off the bookstore shelf, it is surely one you will cherish and, I promise, it is worth it. Also, please note, we get no commissions or anything like that. I just really want you to get your hands on this little treasure.
Of course, I agree with my son about Where's the Bear, so I thought I would share with you today, as a mom and as a teacher, why I still love this book and why I am certain you will too. I hope you enjoy!
Why We Love Where’s the Bear?
1. A Bear Hunt Page-Turner
Where’s the Bear takes kids on an interactive journey as they first search for the bear and then hilariously run from it. The excitement of each page builds anticipation, so your little ones will be fully engaged in the story.
2. Perfectly Interactive
With its repetitive text and playful rhythm, Where’s the Bear invites participation. Your kiddos will love pointing, guessing, and giggling as they help hunt for the bear and then join the playful “escape.” Maybe more important, this involvement creates a feeling of real readership. They touch the pages, anticipate what comes next, and make discoveries with each turn of the page. This is the best way to fall in love with the process of reading a book.
3. Playfully “Not Scary”
Despite the theme of running from the bear, the tone remains light and silly so Where’s the Bear is perfectly suited for toddlers - although my kids loved it beyond the toddler years, maybe because it reminded them of cozy times when they were little or maybe because it's just that good of a book.
Why It’s a Favorite for Families
Where’s the Bear strikes the perfect balance between excitement and comfort, making it an ideal read for toddlers who love to play along with the story. It has a "Good Night Moon" kind of feel that will make parents love it. Older kids can read to younger siblings. And, it's a super fun read for grandparents too.

Bring the Story to Life - Activities inspired by this book that will make it feel even more a part of your child's day
-
Play “Where’s the Bear?” at Home
Hide a stuffed bear around the house and let your toddler hunt for it, just like in the book. -
Get Moving
Act out the story by pretending to run away from the bear. This can be a great way to bring some active fun to your story time routine! -
Create a Bear Den
Build a cozy “den” with blankets and pillows and read the story inside. (I suggest you bring lots of other books in too and maybe even a flashlight!) -
Tell the story from the Bear's Perspective (for older kids)
This is just what it sounds like — a great opportunity to think about character and motive. If your older kiddo is inspired, break out some art supplies and turn it into a book of their own. I wonder what your title might be? Where’s the People, maybe?

Bottom Line: Why This Book is a Must-Read
Where’s the Bear? is a playful, interactive adventure that will have your little ones laughing, participating, and asking to read it one more time. It’s no wonder that after all these years it is still a keeper in my home.
