WE MAKE READING MAGICAL by curating the best books and pairing them with play experiences that bring them to life.

It can be tough, especially in a world of distractions, to raise children who love reading. You might wonder how to find picture books that inspire connection and joy. Maybe you crave truly beneficial activities and experiences that support your child’s development.

If so, you’re in the right place.

meet the founders

Hi! We’re Annie Dycus & Rachel Rubin

We met in kindergarten (as teachers!) and quickly realized we shared a big, magical dream: To redefine what it means to “read” by pairing books with happy, open-ended play.

With over 25 years of teaching experience and two Master of Education degrees between us, we’ve developed a proven, joyful, approach to play-based learning. We created the Read & Play Book Club to help children fall in love with reading through play.

We believe that books can (and should) serve as launching points for simple, yet meaningful, play experiences. Often referred to as “chocolate zucchini bread,” we bring experience, passion, and a whole lot of silliness to everything we do.

Household

Playing with household materials sparks endless creativity and resourcefulness in children. Using simple, familiar items is eco-friendly and budget-conscious, teaching kids to see the potential in everyday objects, and inspiring imaginative play.

Food

Playing with food helps children develop a healthy relationship with what they eat. It provides a multi-sensory experience that reduces the pressure to taste, making food more approachable. This playful interaction fosters comfort and curiosity, encouraging children to try new foods. Keeping food play joyful and repurposing it for meals teaches resourcefulness and reduces waste.

Literacy

Literacy development begins at birth and happens in many stages
including early and emergent literacy. At any age, exposure to literacy attaches meaning to language and leads to the development of the skills
necessary to read, write and communicate. These include acquiring vocabulary, effectively communicating, learning sounds, bringing books to life, developing comprehension and inference skills, connecting with characters, creating stories and so much more!

Recycled

Playing with recycled materials encourages creativity and environmental awareness in children. It transforms everyday waste into imaginative play, promoting problem-solving and resourcefulness. This eco-friendly approach to play materials teaches children the value of sustainability and fosters innovative thinking.

Nature

Engaging with nature encourages mindfulness, sensory exploration, and physical activity. It fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment and promotes a sense of curiosity and wonder about the natural world. Playing with natural materials also helps children develop scientific thinking as they interact with diverse and changing elements in their surroundings.

Water

When children play with water, they enjoy a stimulating sensory experience that promotes fine motor skills, understanding of cause and effect, and vocabulary development. Its soothing, open-ended nature encourages risk-taking and creative exploration.

Transport

Vehicle play captivates children with motion, energy, and sound, evoking a sense of grown-up adventure. It enhances motor skills, spatial awareness, and creativity as kids navigate their imaginative journeys. Playing with transportation toys encourages storytelling and curiosity about the world around them.

Large Motor

Large motor skills help us to move in strong and controlled ways using the whole body. These are especially important for growing bodies because children need their large motor skills to balance, run, walk, climb and, of course, play!

Fine motor

Fine motor skills involve the smaller muscles of the hands and fingers. When strengthened, these muscles enable children to grasp small objects, manipulate materials with precision, feed themselves, pass objects from one hand to the other, pinch with tongs, use scissors, dress themselves and eventually draw and write. These skills are essential for the development of independence as well as basic day to day competencies.

Social-Emotional

Social emotional skills enable children to initiate and maintain a healthy sense of self and relationships with others. Some of the social emotional skills that young children develop include: self-awareness, emotional regulation, social flexibility, and responsible decision-making. As these develop, children become more kind and empathetic members of their communities.

Music

Listening to and playing with different types of music and instruments enhances cognitive development and emotional expression. It also improves listening skills and cultural awareness, encouraging an appetite for and appreciation of the unfamiliar. Engaging with diverse musical styles and instruments provides opportunities for movement and is a fun, enriching way for children to explore the world of sound.

Dough

Using dough as a play material offers children a rich, sensory experience that stimulates their tactile senses. The pliable nature of dough promotes the strengthening of fine motor skills and encourages imaginative play. This versatile material also provides a foundation for essential early literacy and math developmental skills through playful exploration.

Sensory

Sensory processing is the ability to take in and respond to environmental stimuli. Multisensory exposure builds nerve connections in the brain that enable children to complete complex tasks and self-regulate. When children learn how to receive and organize sensory input, they are better able to play with others, concentrate, withstand loud noises, get dressed, eat, and navigate new environments.

Construction

Construction play, from building blocks to imaginative forts, sparks creativity and innovative thinking. It develops fine and large motor skills, improves coordination, and enhances problem-solving abilities. Completing constructions boosts confidence, encouraging children to tackle new challenges.

Science

Scientific exploration develops and nurtures a curious mind. It involves questioning, exploring and experimenting while engaging with the natural world. Young scientists learn to understand cause and effect, observe keenly and delight in making new discoveries.

Math

Mathematical engagement develops logical, critical thinking skills that encourage children to become problem solvers. Some early math concepts include counting with meaning and accuracy, sorting and classifying items, recognizing shapes and patterns, measuring and comparing and more!

Arts & Crafts

Arts and crafts materials ignite creativity and self-expression, all while enhancing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. These open-ended materials encourage uninhibited exploration, sparking problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Crafting offers children a sense of achievement, boosts confidence, and helps them develop their unique artistic talents, celebrating the process over the product.

Animals

Playing with animals, whether real or pretend, captivates children's imaginations with their beauty and mystery. This type of play allows children to feel like grown-ups, taking on the role of caregiver. It fosters empathy, and responsibility, teaching children essential skills for caring for others while indulging their natural curiosity about the animal world.

Loving our LMNOPlay time!
"LMNOPlay is bringing added joy to our family...and creating great opportunities to help install a love of reading for our granddaughter....we love sharing books and activities with her!"

Well Curated Books + Engaging Playtime Activities
"We could not be more thrilled with the LMNOPLAY book club. Our daughter (2) is thrilled when she sees the new book arrive each month. We receive quality books that we read over and over each day. This alone is a fantastic aspect. However, this book club goes far beyond that providing engaging activities to bring the book into our playtime. Each book has a handful of activity cards to go along with the book with creative ideas of ways to craft, build or play with our kid based on the story. This isn't a skill that comes natural to me, so I've enjoyed this immensely for our family."

Best addition to our library!
"We’ve absolutely LOVED adding LMNOPlay’s books and activities to our 3.5 & 5yo’s libraries. The kids are in Montessori school & thrive in both reading and tactile learning environments. The book club literature choices are thoughtful and the activities are well structured and easy to follow. My kids love how much the activities bring the books to life, and we find ourselves re-reading more than usual so we can play more, too. As a tired, working parent, I am so thankful to have the guidance of LMNOPlay so I can deeply engage in my children’s learning journeys without having to think too hard about doing so!“

“L•M•N•O•PLAY! IS SO GOOD AT MAKING LEARNING THROUGH PLAY ACCESSIBLE FOR PARENTS & CHILDREN.”
"LᐧMᐧNᐧOᐧPlay! makes it so a book isn’t just a story we put aside. It’s something we can interact with and become a part of. O loves being able to listen to the story but then engage in the related activities."
