Guiding Questions

1. Spend a moment looking at the cover.

→ What do you think the story will be about?

→ What do you notice about Frank and Bert?

→ Do you think that they’re friends?

→ Can you guess how they might be feeling?

2. Frank and Bert play hide-and-seek a lot.

→ What do you think of Bert’s hiding spots?

→ What would be a really good hiding place for Bert?

3. Frank decides to count to 100 to give Bert more time to hide.

→ Do you think Bert will be able to find a good spot in that amount of time?

→ Do you know how to count to 100?

→ Try counting along with Frank, pointing to each number as you go!

4. Frank starts counting, and Bert runs off to hide.

→ What do you notice? What happens to Bert?

5. Counting to 100 takes a long time!

→ Are you able to guess the number that comes next each time you turn the page?

→ What do you notice happening on each page as Frank continues to count?

6. Frank finally gets to 100. 

→ Look at Bert’s face. How do you think he is feeling?

→ Where do you think Bert should hide?

7. Frank says he found a clue. 

→ What is the clue he is talking about?

→ Do you think the clue will help him find Bert?

8. Frank searches for Bert.

→ How do you think he feels while looking for Bert? 

9. Frank finds Bert easily…but keeps quiet.

→ Why do you think Bert chose that hiding spot?

→ Why does Frank decide to let Bert be the winner? 

10. Frank pretends to give up, and Bert pops out.

→ How do you think Bert is feeling? Why?

→ How do you think Frank is feeling?

→ Are they feeling the same way? And for the same reason?

11. Now it’s time for Frank to hide.

→ Do you think Bert will be able to find him?

→ What happens when Bert starts to count?

12. The story ends with a picture of Bert.

→ What do you notice in this picture?

→ What do you think will happen next in this story?

→ Who do you think will win hide-and-seek this time?
