→ How do you think Ava feels about the day she is about to have with her mom?

4. When they get to the library, Ava’s mom wails, “It’s cancelled,” as they learn there is no storytime. Wailed means to cry out in pain, anger, or disappointment.

→ Have you ever wailed about something?

5. Ava and her mom soothe their disappointment with a special calming technique. They pause, close their eyes, and say, “Whew!” as they let out a deep breath.

10. Ava’s mom crumples and says that she has ruined Saturday. She is very upset.
